Abstract
The impact of climate change on forests can be assessed with simulation models. The obvious advantage is the possibility of running a large number of case studies, without the need for field trials for each specific case. Especially in the context of climate change effects simulation models have become a standard tool. The alternative approach of evaluating the forest growth at sites with site conditions that may resemble the future conditions of the target site has numerous weaknesses. Therefore, models are deemed superior for the interpretation of the consequences of climate change. Simulation models are representative for the state-of-knowledge. Upon their development they are validated against data of existing forests, i.e. either data from national forest inventories or long-term forest productivity experiments [1 4].
