There is an essential difference between the forests of Algeria and those of Europe. In Algeria one finds different species, different systems of management and different values of land use. The general forest types resemble open bush stands rather than the timber stands of Europe. The main forest areas are in the Atlas. The rest occurs in the lowlands between the Atlas and Mediterranean Sea and even extends in a band 200-300 km, along the sea coast.
