The ground vegetation on the forest floor is an essential resource for the Forest site suvey. A general account of the site requirements of the more important woodland herbs in South-West Germany is given. (Neither trees nor bigger shrubs rooting deeper than most of the herbs are considered, but their ecology shall be discussed in another paper). As in former publications of the South German Working Team (see Krauß & Schlenker elsewhere in this edition) herb species with more or less the same attitude towards a certain complex of ecological factors (as acidity or moisture of the soil) are compiled in various "ecological groups". Each ecological group is named after one of its most characteristic species. Altogether 25 groups are described. The relation between them are elucidated by means of diagram.
