1. Serious damages by grubs of Melolontha on widespread forest plantations of the Low-Rhine border communities Kaldenkirchen, Bracht, Brüggen and Elmpt required extensive application of insecticides in 1951. The fighting of the grubs was carried out in the stage of E3. Thus, it could only prevent damage from the plants but not reduce the population below the critical figure, especially as the small May-bug was involved which, as it is known, lays its eggs not only on plantations but also on mature stands and other poorly stocked timber. Therefore, ist was necessary to fight the bugs in spring 1952 to control the outbreak as far as pissible and to avoid further more expensive pisoning on the ground. 2. The Chamber of Agriculture of the Fhineland was charged by the Ministry for Food, Agriculture of the Rhine-Westphalia to prepare and to carry out the spraying. Digging tests proved that for 1952 a serious outbreak of the small May-bug had to be expected.
