It is true for the most part of the Southern German woodland area that irregular mixed stands with a high production of valuable timber have to the composition and ecological and economical aims for the composition and structure of the forests. It is impossible, however, to arrive at a judgment on mixed crops without taking into consideration the structure of the stands. In this connection, the illustration of the composition and structure of the stands by way of diagrams shall no doubt have an increasing importance in the future. 1. The technical literature contains descriptions of recent and actual ecperiments and examples on the subject, for instance in connection with the phenomena of the selection forests, with the structure and composition of virgin forests or with the history of thinning methods.
