The method of thinning is characterized by the absolute and the relative volume, the sociological treee class to which the removed and the remaining trees belong, as well as by the frequency of thinning. Method and intensity of thinnings may be clearly expressed by fractions, whereby the numerator expresses the fellings and the denominator the remaining stock. Since the method thinning directs the sociological structure of the stand, it is sufficient to state for its characterisation the tree classes in the numerator and denominator. A suitable system for the classification of trees is required therfor, which may be seen from the respective publication of the author in No. 8/1953 of the "Allgemeine Forst- und Jagezeitung". The intensity of the individual felling operation is expressed in the numerator by the volume of the actual growing stock after thinning, per Hektar, and its relation in percent to the volume of the ideal growing stock.
