Abstract
In mixed forest stands is mostly no significant difference between main and secondary site species (Haupt- bzw. Nebenholzart). In Switzerland we generally call secondary site species those of subordinate industrial value. Nevertheless for the following reasons they habe quite an impotant silvicultural meaning. Stands under coversion from none indigenous to indegenous, well growing species often have a temporary drop of annual increment. In this time of stand-conversion, fast growing species such as poplar, aspen, black alder, willows, linden, charry-tree, maples etc. may serve temporarily as wood producing substitutes. Moreover, the biological influence of secondary site species may also be considered.
