- Abstract1. In the dry area of the upper Rhine, different tree crown types and the morphology of the relevant root systems were investigated. 2. The different ways of diversion of water of the tree crown types were also examined. 3. It was established that the diversion of water affects in a certain way the morphology of the relevant root system. 4. Such tree crown types which, according to their facourable conditions of water-diversion (funnel-effect), are able to develop tap roots are recommended fot the selction of tree species in dry areas, whereas other types have to be exluded since a total loss may be suffered in cases of ectreme drought. These latter species are liable to be affected by the drought due to the exposure of their waterabsorging organs.
