Abstract
1. The effect of decomposed stumps of the former stand or of the thinnings on the living tree roots. Such stumps are spots of best water storage, aeration and supply of nutrients. That is qha the living roots reach for the stumps and root in mineral soil free of humus. The rooting between the individual trees was examined, considering different tree species. The following types of rooting were distinguished: 1) beech type: Beech, Western Red Cedar, Silver Fir, Red Oak. b) pine type: Scots Pine, Larch, Oak. c) douglas fir type: Douglas Fir, White Pine. d) spruce type: Norway Spruce. 2. The formation of short side roots at the tap root of the silver fir is unusual and is only to be found where the silver fir roots with its rap root along the humus substratum. Investigations with radio-active phophorus seen to confirm up to the present that the tap root is more a holding organ and does not carry nutrients.
