1. The author reviews in the present paper our modern knowledge of the problem concerned. The results of research work reported on in the publications listed in the reference served as a basis. 2. Physiological requirements confine the growing of Scots pine under a shelter to certain sites. The water supply is of particular importance and the better this is the more shade is tolerated by the Scots pine under otherwise identical conditions. 3. The natural regeneration of pine can only establish itself if the initial rooting medium of the seedlings, viz. mor and top soil, never dries out beyond wilting point. This confines the natural regeneration of Scots pine to sites with a groundbvegetation of prevailing branched moses and lichens. These plants effectively protect against evaporation so that even the surface mor with its extremely varying degrees of moisture never dries out under their cover.
