Abstract
Herbaceous plants important in forests have been dug out. Their root systems were described, measured, and schematically drawn. All plants observed had a dense net of roots in the upper 10-20 cm of the soil. In addition some species habe rhizomes in this zone. For some plants, e.g. Aira caespitosa, it is typical to grow in bunches while others, as Calamagrostis epigeios and Pterdium aquilinum, from dense turfs. It could be shown that the depth of the root system - though modified by differences of soil type - is a charcteristic of each species. The depth of the rooting zones varies from 25cm (Phegopteris dryopteris) to 2.00 m (Molinia caerulea). The plants were divided in flat (-30cm) medium (30-60cm), and deep (deeper than 60cm) rooted species.
