Abstract
Title of the paper: Role und objectives of research and teaching in forestry history. Forestry history concerns the history of man-modified forests. Long production periods and long-lasting effects of interferences simulate the interest in the historical background more than in other scientific disciplines. Examples of the importance of forestry historical background for an understanding of current problems. Knowledge in forestry history is therefore indispensable for the prfessional forester. Spezialized research in forestry history is vigorous and substantial but a comprehensive treatment of German forestry history is still lacking. The classical but obsolete books of August Bernhardt (1875) and Adam Schwappach (1886) had so successors. As a result the discipline of forestry history lags behind and lost touch with general history and essentail spezialized historical disciplines. Prospects for improvements are bleak and all efforts to reactivate forestry-historical research have been largely unsuccessful. The complete decline of forestry-historical science can only be avoided if independent institutes or sections for forestry history are created and put undercharge of engaged and motivated forestry historians.
