The use of bioindicators in evaluating sites, the selection of animal-groups, different evaluation methods and evaluation criteria are presented and discussed. In a second part the above mentioned items concerning butterflies are reviewed. The methods of butterfly-mapping, assessment and evaluation in nature conservation planning are shown in detail.
