- Abstractthe paper investigates the effect of different herbicides (sodiumchlorate, trichloacetate, dalapon, CMU, and aminotriazine) on certain microorganisms of the acid, humus-enriched topsoil in a chestnut grove. Before and 3, 6, 14, 26 and 56 weeks after the treatment soil samples were analyzed for total number of germs, number of fungi, activity of saccharase, glucosidase, proteolytic organisms, and nitrifiers. Sodiumchlorate was found to decrease considerably the total number of germs and the acivity of saccharase and glucosidase. The nitrifiers suffered for the longest period. Trichloracetate proved under the experimental conditions less noxious for the soil microorganisms than chlorate. Dalapon reduced the activity of saccherase and of nitrifying organisms but increased glucosidase activity. These three herbicides share the peculiarity of impairing the microorganisms - but not the weeds - stronger by a weak dose than by a large one. CMU decreased the activity of saccharase. Aminotriazine disturbed the organisms with the exception of the nitriteformers ehich were stimulated. the analytical results show that the soil icroorgansms need about one year to reach again the equilibrium disturbed by a single herbicide treatment. It is concluded and advised to wait a year before replanting a treated area.
