Abstract
To study the effect of soil texture, soil water content, machine weight and number of passages on the amount of soll damage, a field trial was performed. For bulk density and penetration resistance, a clear relationship was observed between the compaction degree on the one band, and the machine weight and the moment of traffic on the other, with higher responses as the machine weight increases or the soil water content decreases. For almost all of the measured variables (bulk density, penetration resistance, available water, pore volume), the initial values seem to have a very important influence on the amount of damage that is made. The results of the meta-analysis, performed with studies with a similar set-up, confirm the conclusions from the field trial concerning the influence of the machine weight and the initial soil conditions. The higher the initial compaction degree, the smaller the extra effect after trafficking.
