- AbstractThe action has shown the very complex Situation of LDT and the different approach to deal with LDT all over Europe. New knowledge from various research projects but also knowledge from practise (from forestry to wood processing) could be compiled and discussed in the course of the action. Essential results and Information are compiled in a State of the Art-Report (TEISCHINGER & KASTNER 2008) including comprehensive literature sources which make a further and more detailed reading possible. Concerning economic aspects of LDT production TZSCHUPKE (2004) states that LDT is only good business when the share of prime logs is high enough. But new knowledge and new stem models on LDT allow a better economic approach for the future by making use of the different wood properties and focusing on niche products including specific marketing tools. P. Gerdrum (cit. in TEISCHINGER 2008) states that timber prices are about business and not morality. Prices teil the forester how to buck the stem (instant term), which stand to choose (short term) and how to do silviculture (long term). The worst thing to do would be to give forestry the Impression, that prices for LDT should increase in the future. Models from practise (marketing concepts) and new insight into wood properties (strength properties, stiffness, fibre properties as shown in many publications (e.g. REITER 2005, TEISCHINGER & PATZELT 2006) show that there is still a potential of wood properties to be used and further developed in the process chain of large dimensioned roundwood.
