- AbstractThe growing stock of European Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) has considerably increased in the last decades. Especially, the higher percentage of large diameter timber is considered as ecologically valuable. However, it is also a raw material for the wood industry and has to be harvested before its value further decreases with its age and higher red heartwood amount. Especially timber, which consists of lower quality (e.g. red heartwood), should be given a higher benefit by developing new products and opening up new markets. For some years now, the use of Beech in construction has been increasingly discussed and investigated. On the other hand, this is actually not a very new research field. Already in 1966, the Otto-Graf-Institute Stuttgart published a study that dealt with "glued bea and trusses made of Beech." Even at that time, tensile tests of finger joints and bending tests of component-sized beams demonstrated the efficiency of Beech timber. In comparison to results of Spruce glulam components, Beech beams of same size showed a considerably better strength. For a long time, the promising results of the study above were pursued neither by the industry nor by designers and Consultants, mainly for commercial reasons, because of the lack of experience in the timber construction businesses, and because of the lacking dimensioning basis. In the recent past, research on issues concerning the use of Beech timber in construction has been increasingly promoted. A number of different research projects laid the basis for grading and Beech timber and dimensioning Beech timber structures according to current Standards. Several research projects also focused on the gluing of Beech timber under construction aspects. Primarily, glues that had been certified for softwood and tested in glued wood constructions were investigated. This paper summarizes the actual State of scientific research on glued laminated timber made from Beech as well as about some practical realisations.
