This article covers the large period of time beginning with the early days when no written material about the investigated area existed up to publications dating from the 20th Century. It leads us from the traditional healing methods of the Celts over the cloister medicine and pharmacy facilities to the oldes herbar known for the region as well as to the first written documentation of plant finds. Also the first detailed florstical monographs dating back to the 19th Century are considered. Additionally the article includes the Florae of the 19th Century compiled for the Principalities of Hessen-Darmstadt and Nassau and the neighbouring areas. Finally the plant species listed for the Taunus by the Florae of Reichard, Gärtner, Becker and Fresenius, the records of Senckenberg and the Herbar of Huth are documented.
