Monitoring of Alder-Phytophthora in Vienna

In 2005, stands of Common alders (Alnus glutinosa) and Grey alders (Alnus incana) bordering rivers in Vienna, Austria, were monitored for symptoms of Phytophthora-disease and other pathogens. Most of the alder stands in the area of Vienna were free from Phytophthora disease. Main cause for dieback was drought, esp. in 2003. Phytophthora alni was identified on four sites, on two of them as ssp. alni and on two as ssp. multiformis. On 6 sites, Phytophthora citricola was found to be associated with stem necroses. Measures recommended are the avoidance of any introduction of the pathogen P. alni with plant material as well as hygienic measures on the infested sites.
