Special selection methods are required for breeding programs that improve the resistance of pines to air pollutants. A fumigation method has been developed for evaluating resistance of large numbers of trees to damage by ozone and sulfur dioxide, without destroying any of them. Needle fascicles of seedlings in a nursery are exposed to acute dosages in clear plastic tubing, important environmental variables are monitored, and damage is evaluated within a few days. Equipment and personnel needs are described and illustrated. Objective measurements of various symptoms are integrated in damage rating scales that are suitable for quantitative analyses. Current experiments are designed to estimate genetic parameters, using biparental progenies of Pinus sylvestris that include intra- and inter-population matings.
