- AbstractThe pollution region in the South-east foothills of the Riesengebirge (beech/silver-fir zone from 370 to 740 m altitude) was studied as a model, after the installation of the power station in 1957. Study of the ecological relations between the forest and sulphur-dioxide pollution, of the pattern of forest damage in time and space, and of the effect on yield formed the basis for solving the pollution problem in forestry. The study has been in process for 10 years at three different levels: (1) the fundamentals of the type and effect of individual silvicultural measures are being studied on trial plots; (2) these are then tested on selected stand complexes, both as regards time and spatial aspects; (3) all the forestry results are evaluated in the context of the whole management unit of almost 4,000 ha affected by pollution in comparison to neighbouring undamaged management units; the objects of management are modified, and a form of high-forest management suitable to the pollution conditions is developed. The greatest importance is attached to the management of Norway spruce (75% of the forest area). Accordingly it is impossible from the management angle, and also undesirable because of yield reduction, to give up the growing of spruce altogether. Therefore efforts were made to delimit the degree and extent of conversion in order to make forestry (which in fume-damage regions aims first and foremost at maintaining forest) more profitable. The citeria, the silvicultural techniques and management organization here presented represent a means of doing this.
