- AbstractThe studies were made on Scots pine stands on sandstone in a very dry region of Southern Moravia in the vicinity of a fertilizer factory of the 'Moravian Chemical Factories'. The factory was established in 1910, and extended in 1937 and particularly in 1960. In the manufacture of sulphuric acid, the pollutants released into the atmosphere are sulphur dioxide and a mist of sulphuric acid; fluorine compounds are released in the manufacture of superphosphate, phosphoric acid and salts. Permanent plots were established in the surrounding Scots pine stands. As the prevailing winds are north and north-west, the plots were chosen at various distances south of the pollution source, so as to determine the decreasing effect of pollution. In addition to detailed investigations on air pollution and its effect on changing the environmental conditions (Mrkva, Grund 1969), extensive investigations were made on increment. Ring analyses were made on cores from 100 sample trees in each of the 5 plots (total about 100 cores) in the Dendro-ecology Laboratory of the Research Institution. Similar disturbances in annual ring formation and increment reduction were found as in the smoke-damaged spruce stands of the Erzgebirge. Computer evaluation of the increment changes follows the characters of the structure and health condition of the stands (by tree classes and damage classes of individual sample trees).
