- AbstractThe fungal flora of the Reißinsel (including the forest reserve "Reißinsel") and neighboring floodplain forest areas (nature reserves "Bei der Silberpappel" and "Waldpark") in Mannheim, Germany, was documented over a period of 83 years (1923-2005). The majority of data, however, were obtained in field studies carried out since 1976. A total of 503 species were documented, 432 of which were macrofungi, 53 were obligate plant-parasitic microfungi, and 18 were slime moulds. The macrofungi included 49 species considered rare in Germany and Baden-Württemberg and 30 species listed as threatened or endangered in die red-data list of Baden-Württemberg or Germany. Several of the macrofungal species were thermophiles. The hardwood floodplains of the investigation area had a higher diversity of macrofungi compared to tbe softwood floodplains (365 versus 137 species). Lignicolous species dominated the macrofungal species of both hardwood and softwood forests (74.8-83.3 %). The proportion of terricolous species was 9.6-11.8 % in the hardwood and only 5.5% in the softwood floodplains. Mycorrhizal species were virtually absent. On lawns, orchard meadows, and grassy paths 67 fungal species were found. The data were compared with Species lists of other floodplain forests of the Upper Rhine Valley. The human impact on the fungal flora of the study area was documented by species of obligate plant-parasitic fungi, particularly the rust fungi (Uredinales). Several species found in the first part of the 20th century could not be rediscovered although their hosts still occur in the investigation area. In contrast, the area is enriched by three neomycetes from North America and the Mediterranean.
