The author takes a look at the research results and practical experiences in the field of forest tending published in more recent time, and points out in particular the following: The purpose of stand tending has not changed. It sill remains the highest possible sustained value production. However, emphasis is increasingly laid on the necessity to pay full attention not only to stand tending but also to site tending. There appear to be hardly any substantial differences of opinion as to the suitable methods for reaching this purpose. As regard the procedures applied, however, there is a marked tendency towards replacing careful selction in young-growth and thicket tending for rationalization purpose by schematic procedures using mechanical and chemical means. Surprisingly few researchers in this field try to assess what should be the most important point, namely the actual success of the tending measures. Foresters employed in field work regret that there are hardly any special and long-term investigations into the appropriate tending of selection forests and mountain forests. Practical experience shows that the tending produres developed for clear-cut forests cannot simply be adopted without alterations to these other types of forests.
