There has been an increasing awareness in recent years regarding problems that can arise from tending managed forests. It is the intent of this paper to examine these problems in light of information derived from studies of forest ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. As examples the following studies are discussed: 1. Effect of harvesting and utilization standards on nutrient drain from forest exosystems. 2. Fate of fertilizers applied to forest stands. 3. Value of red alder (Alnus rubra) for increasing nitrogen supply of forest soils. 4. Effect of acid precipitation on productivity of soils. 5. Utilization of forest as a site for disposal of wastewaters and sludges dreived from municipal sewage treatment systems.
