- AbstractThis paper deals with the criteria for selecting representative woodland areas that should become part of a German network of large-scale conservation areas. Due to the prevailing site conditions deciduous and mixed deciduous-coniferous forests, in particular woodlands of European beech, are the most widespread natural vegetation types of Central Europe outside the Alps. In phytosociological terms the following associations represent a large portion of German natural vegetation: Luzulo luzuloidis-Fagetum, Gallo odorati-Fagetum, and Hordelymo europaei-Fagetum. Therefore an adequate representation of these ecosystem types should be at the heart of a national network of large-scale conservation areas. In the evaluation of forest stands with regard to potential conservation areas the entire species composition must be taken into account. Stand structure should be an additional important criterion: Amosaic-like stand structure appears to be a characteristic feature of Central European deciduous forests and of beech forests in particular. Coarse woody debris is a prerequisite of high invertebrate and fungal diversity.
