- AbstractA simulation model named RAM is introduced that is able to simulate the extent of decay caused by Heterobasidion annosum s.l. in stems of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst). Since the model is connected with a position dependent single tree growth simulator it provides the possibility to simulate dynamically the spatial development of the decay in the stem. This includes rot diameter at stem base, rot height as well as the degree of decay and the form of the decay column in the stem. These variables are calculated depending on the single treeęs growth behaviour. The models take into account two different phases of pathogen-tree interaction: Phase A, where the fungus grows unchallenged by the tree in the heart wood and phase B, with clear interactions, where the tree tries to hinder the fungus from colonizing the sapwood. This interaction implies also a feedback on height and diameter growth of the tree. The model is based on published data of other authors that cover several thousand trees, mainly in Germany. The ability of the model to simulated both feedback directions of an tree-pathogen interaction enables the user to work out management concepts based on scenario simulation. These concepts for pest management including an economic evaluation of planned measurements can pave the way for a concise decision support in forests that are affected by H. annosum.
