In the summerdry East of Austria, several experiments with Abies grandis were established since the end of the 1970th. 19 provenances mainly from the Cascade Mountains, which are resistant to drought and frost, are included into the experiments. Recent results show that Abies grandis is fast growing at the beginning, however, growth is strongly influenced by site conditions. At the age of 30, the mean stand density is about 450 to 750 trees per hectare. The mean dbh on the same site type is comparable to Douglas fir and better than Silver fir. Abies grandis is susceptible to red rott (Armillaria mellea).
