Abstract
In the study, the authors made an attempt to determine the proportion of heartwood and softwood in relation to the form of dead bark. The investigations were carried out on four one-hectare experimental surfaces situated in the Babki Forest District and Jastrowie Forest District in mature, pure pine stands developed in conditions of the fresh coniferous forest site type (Bsw) of the 2nd and 3rd site index. The range of occurrence across the mean diameter of sapwood and heartwood in the individual heights of the stem was investigated. Arithmetic means were used to analyse the results. The obtained research results were presented in absolute and relative values, i.e. percentage ratio of the range of the heartwood cylinder in the stem to the softwood ring. The investigations revealed significant differences in the quantity and boundaries of heartwood and softwood in the stems of Scots pines depending on the form of the dead bark. Because of the complexity of the problem, the investigations should be continued.
