The annual assessment of the symptoms revealed a latent situation of the Phytophthora disease of alder in Austria. Recovery of many trees was observed throughout the years and, though the proportion of infected trees was high from the beginning, the mortality was low. Therefore no years could be defined, which were followed by a sudden spread of the disease. This refers especially to 2002 with its high summer flood. For the widespread decline of Grey alder, where Phytophthora was identified at several sites, the initial source of inoculum remains unclear. Furthermore, other weakening factors as spring frost or drought stress have to be examined.
