Abstract
The growth of individual single trees in Norway spruce (diameter increment, height-to-diameter-ratio and development of the relative crown length itself) practically can be managed by the relative crown length and the grade of release. That is the main result of a study, which investigated the growth of 63 single trees taken from a 57 years old even-aged stand of Norway spruce from the southern Thuringian forest. With 50-60 % relative crown length, target diameters from 40 to 60 cm at breast height can already be achieved in 60 to 90 years without loss of timber quality due to large year ring widths. Therefore the management of spruce stands should aim to start thinning at a stage which ensures that relative crown length of the trees is still on a level from 50 to 60 %.The growth of the single trees during the thinning phase can be managed using the results of this study as a silvicultural management tool for several versions of desired developments of relative crown length, h/d ratio and diameter increment.
