This article contributes the basic juristical rules of plant protection in the woodland and gives some examples for regional and special features. First of all the frame of the plant protection law (PflSchG V. 1998) was outlined and some practical advices are given in the context. The possibilities and the limits for the use of insecticides in forest lands were described and also some remarks to the corresponding practical advices by the NW-FVA are given. A special form of integrated bark beetle management in lower saxony resulted in very successful control of the outbreak 2003 in 2004 and respectively 2005. Nevertheless, at the same time the use of insecticides in the state forest of lower saxony decreased in 2004 and 2005 while the logging of coniferous woods increased in 2004. For the advice of practical foresters the frame for possible plant protection activities in woodlands should be pointed out by the specialized advisors of forest protection, but the decision about the concrete measures of plant protection (e.g. spraying of insecticides) is the matter of the respective owner of the forest.
