Abstract
The value of the measured acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) of muscovite is only 0.48% of the theoretically possible ANC. However, the estimated ANC of biotic reaches values of nearly 90% of the theoretically possible ANC. After 17 days of investigation the kinetics of proton buffering can be described by a zero-order rate. The mineralogical investigations show that the treatment of biotite with acid (HCI) led to preferential release of basic cationes. Consequently, a solid residual of altered layers was formed which consisted of nearly 100% of Si, O and probably H. Although the layer structure was still visible, the residual was x-ray amorphous. The chemical composition as well as the crystal structure of the muscovite treated with acid did not differ significantly from the parent material.
