Abstract
The soil in a loess covered low mountain area near Bonn have gone through dramatic changes due to erosion by run-off water. Eroded soils in the hilltop range correspond with colluviated profiles - partly amounting to several meters of thickness - in the valleys. 14C dating and the content of PAH and heavy metals indicate that colluviation started in the 14th century. A main cause was the change in land use from forest to arable land. This, in turn, was initiated by a rise in population since about 1000 y BP. Additionally a climate deterioration developed in the 14th century. The combination of the intensive agricultural land use and the climatic decline induced a disastrous erosion of soils. Thus, human activity, by favouring erosion and colluviation processes, has greatly imprinted on soils and landscapes already in "historic" times.
