After a previous selection among 19 solvents, solutions of two surfactants (Genapol UDD 88, Synperonic LF/RA 30) and a mixture of toluene/acetone (3:2) were tested for their ability to estimate the biodegradable portion of PAH in polluted soils. Depending on their concentration the surfactants extracted up to 71% of the total amount of PAH; the portion being smaller the more condensed the PAH were. Repeated extractions yielded a finite surfactant-extractable PAH fraction, which can be considered as mobile and mobilizable. In contrast, the toluene/acetone-extractable PAH represent about the total amount.
