According to a decision of the Bavarian Parliament from 1989 the Bavarian Forest Institute was instructed to carry out a long termed research project called "Experimental cultivation of fast growing tree species". The aim of the project is to gain experiences with the new land use system of short rotation forestry that can be an alternative for set aside agricultural land. Since 1992 nine experimental plots with an area of 35 hectares were established in several regions of Bavaria. Black alder, locust acacia and clones of balsam poplar, aspen and willow were planted. Meanwhile most of the experimental plots are in third rotation. The highest mass production show the clones of balsam poplar with a growth up to 13 oven dry tons biomass/year and hectare, thus saving on average at least 5000 litre fuel oil! Several harvesting systems from low mechanised with motor manual felling and handfed chipping to the fully automatic working feller chunker were tested for their suitability to harvest short rotation forests. Time studies were carried out to determine productivity and cost-structure of the systems. The project is approved until 2012. The tasks we will address ourselves to in the future are the monitoring of our experimental plots, the necessity of fertilisation and the development of a life cycle analysis.
