Abstract
The influence of site factors on the occurrence of red heartwood in European beech was tested along a gradient in the test regions "Ore Mountains" and "Lowlands" (Saxony/Saxony-Anhalt, Germany). A total of four test stands was selected in the Lowlands for analysing the role of soil skeleton content. In the Ore Mts. seven test stands were chosen in order to evaluate the influence of nutrition (site quality). An increasing soil skeleton content and a decreasing site quality (poor nutrition) tended to result in a decreasing timer quality and higher percentage of red heartwood. The study revealed the necessity to focus the ongoing work on the starting age/diameter of "dry heartwood" formation of European beech on different sites. The "dry heartwood" reveals better the potentiale for later red heartwood formation and thus can be used as indicator for the risk of later quality losses for forest management.
