Worldwide there is an accelerating tendency to urban conglomerations, so-called mega-cities. The approaching of town and forest leads to changes of the requirements traditionally made on the forest. Today the forest has an outstanding importance as a recreation area for many citizens longing for pseudo-wilderness in contrast to the inhuman urban environment. This situation results in a number of problems and dangers, having very insufficiently or not at all been dealt with in forest sciences education. This is illustrated by the commitment to maintain safety; and the curriculum for "Urban Forestry" at the Tharandt Department of Forest Sciences is introduced.
