The aim is to model the risk of disturbance and damage of protected areas by tourism. As a prerequisite for this, the flow of visitors has to be modelled. Visitor flow simulations can be performed with agent-based models. They facilitate the estimation of future touristic developments and the evaluation
of the effectiveness of management measures. The model of risk analysis combines data on tourism with data on the sensitivity of protected species and habitats. Methods
of visitor flow assessment have to take into account the size of the test area, the kind of touristic use and the touristic infrastructure. Different techniques are available, such as interviews, field observations (counting), traffic data, webcams, GPS data, aerial photos etc. The methods are analysed and tested in the project AlpNaTour in selected alpine areas in Lower Austria.
