- AbstractThe alpine space is a spectacular natural setting with a high proportion of rare fauna and flora. To protect this special biological diversity, notable areas of the Alps have been included in the Natura 2000 network, the European system of protected areas under the Habitats and Birds Directives. At the same time, the alpine space constitutes a very important area for tourism and recreation and therefore contributes enormously to the economic base of many communities and regions. Regarding the future development of Natura 2000 areas the question arises, how the requirements of sensitive species and habitats and the maintenance of tourism usage can be accommodated in this area simultaneously. One key instrument towards that goal is the management planning process for Natura 2000 areas, which integrates the demands of the various user groups and lobbying bodies. The project AlpNaTour will contribute to the exchange of experiences and knowledge about the management planning process in the alpine space. As to the consideration of recreational and touristic use, several monitoring and surveying methods will be tested in the study sites to evaluate their efficacy and efficiency. Another main focus of the project is dedicated to public participation processes. Adapted to regional circumstances, an appropriate approach for participation is going to be developed. Overall, AlpNaTour will contribute significantly to the sustainable development in the Alpine Region and to a co-operative implementation of the directives of the European Union through the development of guidelines for the management planning process in Natura 2000 areas influenced by tourism and recreation.
