An investigation to determine the natural conditions of forests has started in Hungary, following respective initiatives in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The analysis was stand-level oriented and the selection of the forest sub-compartments was executed by stratified random sampling. Composition and structure of the canopy, shrub layer, herb layer and regrowth, quantity of dead wood, game damage and the condition of the site were investigated on the basis of 38 indicators. The evaluation has been started, in which the naturalness of the Hungarian forests are shown broken down by regions, forest association groups, cultivated forest-types, naturalness criteria and site factors.
