Results of assessments in eight trials with progenies from 54 mostly Hessian Douglas fir stands are presented. If height, volume production, per hectare, straightness, forking, branchiness, discolouration and needle cast are considered up to age 15 the variation was comparable to autochthonous provenances. This is also true for single stands belonging to some of the so-called "Sonderherkünfte", which are groups of especially phenotypically selected stands. Obviously, it is a problem to compile stands of unknown origin into the same seed collection unit. As fas as foreign tree species are concerned every single stand should be evaluated individually. According to the results of the trial, nine stands are recommended to be cancelled from the list of registered seed stands. On the other side two stands should be registered as basic material for the selected category. Furthermore, we will try to get a registration as tested reproductive material for the best stands. As long as the number of seed orchards and tested stands is insufficient in Germany the import of proved provenances from the native range should become admissible again.
