- AbstractWithin the Lüneburger Heide nature reserve, which comprises approximately 234 qkm of heathlands, bogs, forests and fields, annual breeding bird censuses have taken place since 1989. Results have been used to evaluate a federally funded heathland management and restoration project, that has been carried out in the open, heathland-dominated areas within the nature reserve (about 80 qkm), from 1991 to 2004. For some of the target bird species, e.g. Black Grouse, Nightjar, Green Woodpecker, Woodlark, Stonechat and Grey and Red-backed Shrike, stable, or even increasing, local breeding populations have been documented during this period. An ongoing shift in the distribution of Nightjar territories as apparent, with a move away from pine forests towards heathlands. Heathland restoration work on former military training areas within the reserve has led to a considerable increase of breeding densities in Nightjar and Woodlark. Local breeding populations of a small number of bird species, including Curlew, Wryneck and Wheatear, have, however, declined, reflecting overall trends throughout NW-Germany. In terms of objectives for target bird species, this nature conservation project is considered to have been successful.
