The wood of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) has come into focus of interest since the intensive discussion on the use of tropical timber. Besides the manifold positive properties (e.g. durability, hardness and strength), which are the reason for the attractiveness of black locust as a substitute for certain tropical timber species, quantities and potential availability have to be considered. Up to now, the wood of black locust was considered as raw material for niche products. An increase of utilisation will only occur, if the specific advantages are communicated to a wide circle of users, specific processing and machining techniques are developed and optimised, and a sustainable supply to sufficient quantities can be secured. From a wood science perspective hardly any obstacles exists, which would restrict a widerning of utilisation of black locust. Many problems have already been solved, but knowledge about this is indadequate in industrial practice. Currently, the wood of black locust is used for certain high value applications. This will and should be maintained as long as the available quantities are not increased on a sustainable basis.
