- AbstractA short overview is given on the pathogens transmitted by arthopods and causing infections of man in Central Europe. The most important diseases are Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis, but besides a few other (rare) viruses, bacteria, and protozoa transmitted by ticks, several mosquito-bonre viruses, predominantly causing febrile illness, occur in Central Europe. In addition, Leishmania infantum transmitted by Phlebotomus species (sandflies) is apparently an emerging disease in Central Europe, being of particular significance for immunocomprised patients. In past centuries other vectors - fleas, body lice, Anopheles species - and the respective pathogens and diseases transmitted by them - Yersinia pestis: plague, Rickettsia prowazekii: typhus, Plasmodium spp.: malaria - have been of utmost importance and have left deep traces in the human population and the history of Central Europe.
