- AbstractIn the view of the existence of 2.000 National Parks and restricted Nature Reserves worldwide this concept of global nature and environment protection is one of the most successful habitat strategies. Without this area strategy the global biodiversity protection is not thinkable. Concerning the common are protection categories worldwide the IUCN has formed some definitions and criteria that are applied in the Iran, too. The IUCN distinguished between 7 protection categories. Three of them are potentially particular important in the Caspian Region and are presented here now. There is the restricted National Reserve (Categorie I a), the Wilderness Reserve (Categorie I b) and the National Park (Categorie II). With regard to these categories the IUCN prescribes definitions, management objectives, selection criteria and last but not least recommendations concerning the responsibility by the state. To protect the central and western Caspian Forest it is necessary to designate National Parks with regard to the conservation of biological diversity. A combination of National Parks and Biosphere Reserves with 100.000 ha each of them: The half or a third part of the area should be designated with the status of National Park.
