Actually there are in the Iran 119 protected areas with an area of 8,8 mill. hectares. This corresponds with 5,4% of the country. But in the Caspian Forest region 23 protected areas with a total area of 760.000 ha are protected. These include a lot of relics and are therefore habitat of a lot of endemic species. The Caspian Forest takes a special position because it in the opposite to the rest of the country includes no arid or semi-arid areas. Today there exist 11 National Parks, 6 national Natural Heritage Areas, 25 Hunting-restricted Areas and 77 Nature Reserves in administration of the Iranian Environment Organization. The National Park of Golestan - including 90.000 ha - is particularly important in the Caspian Region. In addition the Environment Organization in cooperation with the forest organization will implement the aims of the Bali-Congress of 1982 by protecting 10% of the total Iranian woodland area. In the year 1996 18 wetland areas - with 1.400.000 ha - were designated to the international list of wetlands on the basis of RAMSAR Convention. 2,5 mill. ha of the area with nine biosphere reserves are part of the worldwide network of UNESCO MAB-program. A lot of them are designated as National Park, too.
