Abstract
The forest faculties and departments at Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany are faced to a dynamic development of the general conditions for forestry in the recent years. Here, especially the structural changes in timber industry and the never ending revision of the legal forms of the (former) state forest administrations, represent new challenges for the orientation of forest education. Beyond this background, the University of Applied Sciences, Rottenburg (HSR) emphasizes since 1995 a modular and interdisciplinary education in a close cooperation with partners from different Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany and also Europe (Netherlands). This offers the possibility to provide four different specialisations in the forest study course and several multidisciplinary and inter-institutional master courses like SENCE (Sustainable Energy Competence) and others. A focus of the actual activities of the HSR is laid on (1) the up-building of future-oriented partnerships and networks for widening the education, training, research and service portfolio and (2) on an active development and market-oriented sharpening of the profile of the HSR. This strategy will address else the students as "prime customers" of the HSR, else administrations, private companies in the forest-wood-energy sector, land owners as well as national and international policy makers and will be the optimum answer to the demands of a modern forest management.
