Abstract
Tugay forests are typical ecosystems in the floodplains of the West and Central Asian semi-deserts and deserts. This contribution focuses on the Populus euphratica forests along the Tarim river in the Autonomous Region Xinjiang (NW China) as one of the largest, unfragmental Tugay forest ecosystems in the world. Intensive land use, in particular the cultivation of cotton with its high water consumption, has led to a strong degradation of these natural ecosystems. A major task for the future will be the protection and restoration of these Tugay forests because of their internationally high significance for nature conservation.
