Abstract
The investigation of the naturalness of the forest tree composition is included in the German Federal Forest Inventory 2002 for the first time. The degree of naturalness of the forests is referenced to the local natural forest association, which is derived from the model of the potential natural vegetation and is closely related to the local site conditions. The precised tree composition of these forest associations (principal tree species, associated tree species and early successional tree species) is depending on growth region and elevation zone. These information were ascertained by the forest research institutions of the federal states of Germany and transferred to the Federal Research Center for Forestry and Forest Products, where the calculations were processed. Five categories of naturalness are defined by the percentage of the potential natural tree species in the actual stands on the sample plots. The results indicate Baden-Wuerttemberg at a high degree of naturalness in its forests. 49 % of 13.200 sample plots relate to the naturalness categories I (very close to nature) or II (close to nature). The naturalness of the young growth (< 4 m height) is situated at a still higher level.
